my NASA experience
(We had to do a presentation over what we learned at NASA on the last afternoon we were there--only three minutes long. This is mine.) :)
In October of 1957 Sputnik (above) crossed the night sky. It was a wake-up call to Americans. We are in a Sputnik moment. What will America do this time around? The biggest lesson I have learned this week at NASA is that as teachers a lot of how we will react as a nation will be up to us. Mrs. Sindelar (one of our presenters) said that the best scientists, engineers, physicist . . . they all began in a classroom with a teacher who instilled in them a desire to work hard and accomplish their goals.
I will be reporting back to my university when I get home, but the first people who I will have to report to . . . our my three kids (below).
They will ask, "Mommy, what did you do at space camp?!?!"

I learned about physics by jumping on a wall in a Velcro suit!
Their mom got to try on an astronaut helmet.
I got to explore museums at the Space Center Houston, and tour the Johnson Space Center including the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (the place with the big swimming pool).
To Dad's dismay Mommy didn't get to ride in a centrifuge, but I did get to lay down in class with my feet in the air at a 90 degree angle for ten minutes, so blood would rush to my head (and yes, I lost one cm in my leg, just to gain a cm in my head).
And I made lots of new friends. :)
Oh, and by the way . . . your Mom is now licensed to handle moon rock!!!!!! :)

And those future scientists, physicists, and engineers that sit in our classrooms will rise to the challenge . . . all because we spent a week at the NASA Pre-Service Institute 2011!!!! :)
